The follow is the history of the Lunger Family by J. Fred Lunger. Thanks to his grandson Mike Lunger for sharing with me the research that he spent many years working on. As of now I have over 600 names in the family tree with many, many more to add. If you have anything you would like to share or dates you may have found, please email me at Norenet1@aol.com
The History of the Lunger Family
Early day Historians believe that the ancestors of the present day Swedes lived in Sweden as long ago as the late stone age. A tribe called the Goths lived in Sweden since about 300 B.C. and inhabited that part called Gotland. It is this part of the county of Orebro, east of the city of Orebro and about seventy five miles west of Stockholm where the little village of Lunger is situated. In 1964, Mr. Birgit Laquist of the Orebro Lens Museum wrote me “Lunger is a very old village in the Parish of Gotlunda. In 1323, the name was written LUNGYR and in the village cemetery are graves from the Viking age and older”.
Migration started from Sweden to Europe in about the year 200 A.D. and continued thru the Viking period (700’s to 900’s). The origin of the Russian Empire is involved in much obscurity, but it is usually regarded as having been founded by Rurik, a Scandinavian, about the year 862 A.D. The Scandinavians founded Cities and States all the way to the Black Sea. The State Church of Sweden is Lutheran where about 90 of 100 belong. I doesn’t seem to me to absurd to reason that during this period of Swedish conquest and establishment of cities and states in Eastern and Southern Europe for some Lunger families from Sweden to have settled around the Tyrol where many still live.
From the State Archives of the Canton of Underwalden, Switzerland, they wrote me that there were records of a Hemma von Lungern in 1280, an Ida von Lungern in 1300, a Jost von Lungern in 1321, and an Anton von Lungern in 1486, But they had no record of the name Lunger. From Innsbruck, Austria, they wrote me that there were about 60 people with the name living in Bozen Province but they had moved to Germany. Dr. (Lawyer) Luis Lunger of Bolzano, Bozen wrote that there were many Lunger families in the community of Kerneid where they had lived for generations and he can trace his family back to 1650. His grand father was Josef Lunger and his father was Alois Lunger who died in 1943. Mrs. Ruth Lunger Impagiazzio wrote me in March of 1966 Martin Lunger, the son of Luis Lunger’s brother went with them to the village of Karneid up in the mountains where the Lungers originally came from. Karneid is a tiny village of about a half dozen houses and a church. The people are all Austrian farmers and speak Austrian. We went thru the little grave yard by the church and found quite a few Lungers buried there. The stones only date back to the 1800’s. We met the priest of the church and he showed us a very old book with lots of Lunger births, marriages and deaths recorded. The first one was the baptism of a daughter Ursula of Andrew and Maria Lunger, September 11, 1747. The priest said the original church had been destroyed in the 1600’s and he had no idea of what became of the old books. Another item she mentioned was Philip, the son of Jacob and Katherine Lunger baptized May 3, 1754.
Jacob Lunger probably born in the Tyrol near Karneid came to the United States on the ship Europa, Captain Lumsdaine commanding. He took the oath of Allegience at Philadelphia November 20, 1741. It is not known if Jacob and his wife Catharine were married before they came to the country or shortly after he arrived as the passenger list did not include names of women. From Philadelphia, Jacob migrated to upper New Jersey where he became an extensive land owner, planter, and influential member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Greenwich. When he died in 1760, he was considered a wealthy man for those times. The record book of the St. James Church contains the following entry in German: On February 26, 1781, Frau Catharina, widow of Jacob Lunger died in Mansfield.
Sussex Co. Clerk’s Office, Newton, NJ Deed book A., Page 310. dated June 27, 1785 Heirs of Jacob Lunger, the elder, late of the Township of Mansfield Woodhouse in the County of Sussex.
Recites as follows:
We, Jacob Lunger, Ludwick Lunger, Abraham Lunger, Elizabeth, wife of Simon Hibler, Margaret, wife of Jacob Hushizer, Catherine, wife of Peter Kase, and Mary, wife of Adams Saunders being children and heirs of Jacob Lunger the elder, etc., etc.,
Also Deed Book I, Page 370 same recitals.
Besides the seven children of Jacob and Catharina listed as his heirs, I have as possibly their children:
John (Johannes) born October 4, 1749 or 1750 married Anna ?. They had Elizabeth born in 1772, Margareth born in 1774 and Catharina born in 1782. No further information.
Adam Lunger confirmed 4/19/1772 In Rev. War. No further information
Frederick born before 1774, married Julianna.
The above could have been deceased in 1785 and so would not appear as Jacob’s heirs.
Signed,
J. Fred Lunger
